Here’s an assortment of recipes and tips for making your own toothpaste, teeth whiteners and mouthwash. Many use simple ingredients and are easy to whip up (pretty frugal too!). These were previously published on different pages and combined here for one handy project sheet.

Ingredients needed:
  • Baking Soda
  • Xylitol (this is a natural sugar substitute that you can find in your local health stores or online)
  • Salt
  • Liquid Glycerine
  • Essential Oil
You can store the mixture in jars and spoon out as you use it, but one commenter had a clever idea to keep it in capped squeeze bottles–just pipe out what you need mess-free. Please visit the site above for the recipe and all the details.

For those that can’t watch the video, here are the details:
Ingredients:
1/4 cup Vegetable Glycerin
1/4 cup Baking Soda
10 to 15 drops of Peppermint Essential Oil (food grade)
  • Directions: Too easy! Just mix the items together and voila! it’s ready to use.
What this clever gal did was cut open an empty (used) tube of toothpaste, cleaned out the inside then scooped the mixture into the tube. Fold over the cut end of the tube then secure with a squeezer or packaging clamp. This one’s goopy and can be a bit runny so it’s not thick and pastey like commercial products (which may take a bit of getting used to), but it does the trick and it’s so cheap to make!
Quick & Easy Paste:
1 tsp baking soda
1/4 tsp hydrogen peroxide
  • Mix into a paste then brush teeth
Simple Tips

DIY Whiteners:
Fruity
1 tsp baking soda
1 TBS fresh, mashed strawberries
  • Mix into paste then use to brush teeth
Lemony
  • Sprinkle baking soda on a lemon wedge then gently rub upper and lower teeth for 1 minute upper and 1 minute lower. Then brush as usual. Don’t do this more than once per week.
Mouthwash Recipe:
3 cups boiling hot water
3 tsp fresh peppermint leaves
2 tsp fresh coriander
1 tsp anise seeds
  • Mix all ingredients, cover and let sit for 25 minutes. Once cool strain the liquid and bottle in a sterilized jar.
